A night out in in Murcia. (Version 2)

By: Russell Marsh

A follow up brief guide to bars in the City of Murcia.
Going out in Muria City is great fun if you're British.
If you like you can do the 'Brit' thing (Go out at 6.00p.m. and be home in bed at 1.00a.m. ready for some kip) it's more interesting to try to be 'continental' in Murcia. Most of the bars in Murcia don't really get going until around 12.00a.m. so you'll miss a lot of action if that's the way you choose to go.

Here's a tip: To get the best out of your night out in Murcia change your body clock to a Murcian night out by simply changing your watch by a couple of hours. Don't consider going to a "real" Murcia bar before 10.30pm. Earlier on, if you want to be around the place why not have a coffee in Plaza Cardenal Belluga (Cathedral Square) and admire the beautiful floodlit Cathedral. from the terrace. Then you couldwalk to the Hotel Rincon de Pepe (Apostoles, 34) for a snifter in the "La Muralla" bar, one of the few places in Murcia where the old Arab walls can still be seen.

This is a follow up article in this series. Here's a few more of some of the more interesting bars in Murcia.

La Codiga (Gran Vía Alfonso X ) More of a Spanish bar this. Latin rhythms are the speciality in this club.
Leather trousers and chest wigs are optional ;-)

Los Cuatro Gatos (12 Calle Alfaro.) is right next to the Roman Theatre. Here we have livegroups and comedy shows on stage. Nice place this.

Super 8 (Avenida Ciclista Mariano Rojas, Local 16, Molina del Segura.) Not far from Murcia centre, Super 8 is an cool
bar/club which usually has one band on stage each week. It draws a youngish, predominately indie type bunch and opens from 12.30am-6.30am

La Puerta Falsa (5 Calle San Martín de Porres.) Nice relaxed bar with music
from local talent. Also features regularly changing exhibitions of paintings on the walls.

Sala Univesal (1 Avenida Juan Carlos.)Brash and exciting - a famous bar in Murcia. Different music played in several rooms so something for most here...

Gospel (15 Enrique Villar. Tel. 968 203 234) A city centre pub for the young crowd. The sounds range from
Blues to Rock to Jazz. Open until 3am.

Tasca Gao (17 Calle Canovas del Castillo.) Bouncing place that specialises in miniature bottles of spirits (duh.. hurts my
head..) . Regular target for people on hen/stag parties in fancy dress at the weekends.
Utopia (7 Velázquez.) This is an unusual place and is the management describe it as a theatre-bar. The interesting décor is a copy of theatrical scenery. Utopia has all kinds of acts on stage ranging from musicians, small bands, to actors reading monologues. When the live acts end it's mainly rock, blues and Britpop music.

DNC Dance Club (Puerta Nueva, Edificio Centrofama. Tel. ) DNC says it's the only true club in Murcia city centre. It's right in the busy university area. This is a really busy spot during term time. DNC plays house music and standard pop against a backdrop of trendy décor. Free drink with your admission.

Mundaka Club (26 Carretera Santa Catalina.) Maybe the most buzzing club in Murcia, playing
Dance and seventies disco. There are 3 rooms with different sounds that provide something for most tastes. Fridays and Saturdays are stop out nights from 2am-6.30am. (Now see why you need to pace yourself?)

Kennedy Bar (Callejón de Berruezo.) Cracking Irish bar that's popular all day long. Come here for the black stuff and premiership footy. Fantastic variety of other ales also. Live comedy on
Wednesdays. Buy one get one free on drinks when soccer matches are on.

Fuente Alamo (Carretera N301, Fuente Álamo.) Unusually for pubs in Murcia this is a Western themed pub with
saloon bars and coyboy gear. It's actually a cracking night out if you're up for a lively one!!.

Sala Fluid (Orilla de Azarbe.) Another techno-house place that's open until 6.00. Maybe get some strong coffee
before entering if you want to make it through the night. Dazzling array of cocktails on offer, though pace yourself or the legs may not last the night..

Kallejon (Calle Ceuti, Poligono Insustrial Atalayas) Most of the clubs in Murcia are outside the city centre due to restrictions on noise levels. Kallejon is no exception. We have two dance floors featuring Commercial Techno stuff and Spanish pop. Opens Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights ('tillate).

El Mentidero (3 Saavedra Fajardo. Tel. 968 223 533) Trying to escape from the techno music in all the Spanish clubs then El Mentidero is no different to the rest. Lively bar with a dance floor and is open till 3am. It's near the
University.

That just about covers it for the 2nd instalment of bars in Murcia City. There's a few to go at anyway.. Should you visit any other Murcia pubs that you think deserve a mention then email me and let me have the lowdown. Cheers!!
