Elimination Dieting: Spotting Your Migraine Trigger

By: Jasmine Mayfair

Though an interdependence exists, science can't proffer a reason how a person's diet can influence one's migraines. Sadly, the food triggers are special for each migraine sufferer — it’s not similar to someone who needs to slash their cholesterol and the expert tells them to consume egg whites and drop the bacon, migraineurs have to determine their triggers on their own. The best means to do this is with an elimination diet.

The primary step in any elimination diet is to come up with a list of possible triggers. A migraineur has experienced a headache the day after every football gathering for years. What was served up? Who hosted? What items were common from party to party? If it doesn’t crop up every time, what was distinctive? Did someone else make the potato salad this week? Make a list of the suspects and shift to step two.

This is the most grueling step in an elimination diet. Until a suspect is established, everything from the meal that seems to trigger a headache must be eliminated. Then the dieter can add up items back into their life, one at a time, until they see a trigger. Once the trigger is diagnosed, it can be averted.

Elimination doesn't stop with the identification of the first trigger. A good number of migraineurs have several triggers.

If an elimination diet is going to be of assistance to someone, he or she needs to detect all the triggers.
For many migraineurs, the trigger is not a certain food, but a fusion of foods. For example, avocados trigger migraineur A and B is okay with them. However, when B gobbles guacamole he picks up a headache every time. Why? Guacamole is included as one of many frequent triggers including avocado, citrus juice, seasonings, and vinegar. B may be okay munching any one of these alone, but combine them and its sure recipe for a headache.
