Fundamentals of Buying an Air Conditioner

By: Jason Uvios

At the end of a long, hot summer day the last thing that one would need is stuffy and humid home to come back to. The best way to deal with the problem would be to invest in an air conditioner.

But deciding to buy an air conditioner is only the first step. The more crucial thing that you need to decide about is which air conditioner to buy. With so many manufacturers in the fray, you would not be lacking options to choose from. The range of air conditioners on offer is truly mind boggling. They vary depending on the capacity, the efficiency, the features, the looks and of course on the brand.

But don’t get too bogged down by the sheer challenge of choosing the perfect air conditioner for your home. There are a two basic things that you need to know to make a decently wise choice for your air conditioner. We will be giving the pointers in the following part of this article.

Capacity of Your Air Conditioner

The cooling capacity of the unit you buy is the most important thing that you will need to decide on while buying an air conditioner. If the capacity is too less then the room wouldn’t be cool enough. If the capacity is too high, then you will be wasting extra energy and the running costs would be unnecessarily higher. So you have to get it as right as possible.

Generally the capacity of air conditioners are measured in terms of British Thermal Unit. The best way to calculate for the capacity is to first find out the floor area of the room you want to install the air condition in. then you multiply it with 25 and this will give you the BTU rating you need in your air conditioner. For a more accurate rating add 1000 BTU for every window in the room.

Efficiency of Your Air Conditioner

The more efficient your air conditioner is the better it would be both for your wallet and for the planet Earth. With increased efficiency an air conditioner would consume less energy. So your electricity bills would be kept under check. As you will require less energy for your cooling needs, less of conventional sources of furl like oil and coal will be consumed. So the environment will also be harmed less. Any unit with Energy Efficiency Ratio around 9.5 and 10 is good enough.
