Linear Garage Door Openers: Sturdy Design Over the Years

By: Steven Magill

The clicker is the more popular name of the linear garage door openers. Having been in existence for more than 30 years, this item has been the convenient gadget when opening the door. Simply designed to clip unto your car shade near the roof, the linear garage door opener has for the most part remained simple in design and function. In fact the design has been there for so long that it has become almost if not a part of the American Culture. In so many movies has this remote control been featured since the 70's when it was first introduced, and though it may have been often ridiculed, the purpose of this item still remains as prominent and as purposeful as it was meant to be.

Automatic Garage Doors were actually invented in 1926 by C.G Johnson in Hartford City, Indiana. Using the principles of balance and counterbalance, the door opener actually only controls the measured opening and closing of the door. Subsequently, the garage door opener is also the lock of the door.

An electric garage door has the following items:

- An electric motor/ power unit
- Trolley
- Garage door or doors
- Garage door tracks
- Remote control door openers and wall remote openers

Like how a roller coaster works, the electric motor releases the trolley arm for the garage to open or close but without the necessary angles as that of the ride.

These days, garage door openers operated on a frequency limited to 315 Mhz. This is the assigned frequency for door openers in order to avoid any interference with other frequencies that may be assigned to the government. These remote control garage door openers were made more secure through hopping or rolling code technology, a significant technology from the previous set up which was meant only to open a specific door through dip switches and a preset digital code set by the owner. In the earlier days, there were parodies in films and television series wherein a character would press the door clicker only to open the doors of his or her neighbors but not the intended garage.

The more recent features that have been added to this clicker, this icon of a unit are the following:

- Remote lockout. A feature that turns off the radio receiver for the garage for an extended time as preset by the owner. This is good especially for extended vacations

- Automatic Courtesy lights. Lights in the garage automatically turn on when the garage door opens and turns off after a predetermined time.

- Wireless keypads and key chain remotes to open the garage doors.
