Snoopy Baby - True Dog Campanionship

By: Chris Jensen

"Mom keep it safe, I will take it back after school is over", I shouted as I ran back to my classroom. Mom told me later that she did not know what to do with Snoopy, but knew for sure that she had to keep it safe for my sake. This was the start of a new relationship.

He was like a family member in the house loved by every one. He was also aware of our needs and was able to react in a very positive way in most situations. I remember once I was very upset about something and he realized my situation and did not leave me even for a minute alone. He would sit right next to me till the time I slept. This was when he was 4-5 year old.

He was also very naughty and used to spoil our newly spread bedsheets. It goes like this mom is making the bed he will be looking at her from the door and I felt he had a smiling face, the very moment mom is finished he would jump on to the bed and spoil the whole bed sheet with his paws and would run away and hide under the bed.

He would go to every member of the family for different reasons, he knew that for food he should go to mom, if he was sick he would go to pops, to play he will challenge my younger brother for a game of tug of war, or simply start biting his feet to take off his slipper. He would come and sit with me to relax and to get him self scrubbed or scratched, or when he wanted to go out for a walk. He used to be very enthusiastic about life and would get up very early in the morning and would call us to go out and play with him.

I also felt that he was aware of our energy level and his mood would match. Not that he didn't have his own mood swings. Was a bit insecure at times I was told by my mom that there used to be a small puppy at our neighbors and mom would go to him and cuddle him. He must have seen that and was not happy about it and showed his jealousy, he always felt that he was the baby of the house and did not like any one paying attention to other kids. Mom felt so bad she stopped going to that puppy.

My brother and I grew up with him. Mom always called him my baby. So many times she would call one of us Snoopy. Once she called out to my brother to hand over Snoopy's chain. What she actually said was, "Snoopy, bring Ripple's chain." And my brother actually handed her the chain.

He stayed with us for 14 years. He died of cancer. It was very difficult for us to bid him farewell. He was very calm and serene when he passed away in his sleep. God bless his soul.
