Your web page cannot be indexed and searched by the search engines without backlinks. If you want your website suggested to users by the search engines you must have backlinks.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO has a tremendous impact on your websites success rate. The search engines use the sites rankings to judge its popularity. The search engines will see the site as more important the higher its popularity rank is. Search engines use several methods to rank a website. Backlinks are one of the most important aspects search engines look at when ranking the site.

When another website places a link to your page on theirs it is considered a backlink. The amount of backlinks your website has will determine its popularity and importance. A backlink is nothing more than another website placing a link to your website on their own website that directs traffic to you when the link is clicked. One backlink is considered one vote for your site, the more backlinks you can get the better you rise to the top of the search results.

Google uses a PR number to rate your sites popularity, the higher the number the better. To get your PR number increased you must start accumulating backlinks to your website. Other search engines may not find the backlinks as significant but they are still used to measure the importance of your web page. Your site will need high quality content as well as good incoming links in order to rank good.

About one every three months Google will update its page rankings. During this update there are several million web pages that have just went live and start out with a PR0 rating. If you are checking your incoming links and notice a page that has a PR0 that is linked to your website, look at the homepage. Many times the sub pages are just launched but the index page will have a will be given a higher PR.

Google will also make a newly created website wait for three to four months before assigning them a PR. This gives new web owners time to gather backlinks and create the right anchor text for their sites and to establish the right anchor text for their web pages. If you have backlinks they have to be on subject your site. The best type of backlinks to have on your site are one way links.

You do not want to have backlinks that are not matched to your page or there may be unwanted traffic connected. You have to be careful not to get involved with backlink programs in the so called bad part of town. If you are linked to a shady site it can kill your SEO rankings. You cannot help who has linked to you but you will be penalized for who you link to.

Backlinks will bring traffic to your webpage. You want to ensure that the traffic is desirable and relevant to what your site offers. If you can find sites that have a high PR to link to your site it will improve your chances or getting noticed as well as allow the search engines to see your website as more important and popular.
